What ISO 27001 certification means for a Canadian company
ISO 27001 certification is written confirmation from an independent certification body that your information security management system, or ISMS, meets the requirements of ISO/IEC 27001:2022, the third edition of the standard, published in October 2022.14 ISO writes the standard and stays out of certification: it does not perform certification or issue certificates, so every certificate comes from an outside certification body.4
In Canada, the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) accredits the certification bodies that audit an ISMS against ISO/IEC 27001. SCC describes itself as the only internationally recognized accreditation body in Canada offering this accreditation, and as a signatory to the International Accreditation Forum's recognition arrangement for the sub-program, so a certificate from an SCC-accredited body is widely accepted abroad.6
Certification is a choice. ISO notes that some organizations implement the standard for the practices it contains, while others also get certified to reassure customers; it reports over 70 000 certificates in 150 countries in its 2022 survey.1 SCC lists procurement eligibility requirements, regulatory compliance and competitive differentiation as common reasons Canadian organizations turn to accredited certification.6
