ISO 27001 certification readiness for Canadian companies

We prepare your company for the ISO 27001 certification Canada-based customers and public buyers ask for: the scope of your information security management system, a risk register, the Statement of Applicability, written policies and an internal audit. An accredited certification body then audits you and issues the certificate.46

What ISO 27001 certification means for a Canadian company

ISO 27001 certification is written confirmation from an independent certification body that your information security management system, or ISMS, meets the requirements of ISO/IEC 27001:2022, the third edition of the standard, published in October 2022.14 ISO writes the standard and stays out of certification: it does not perform certification or issue certificates, so every certificate comes from an outside certification body.4

In Canada, the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) accredits the certification bodies that audit an ISMS against ISO/IEC 27001. SCC describes itself as the only internationally recognized accreditation body in Canada offering this accreditation, and as a signatory to the International Accreditation Forum's recognition arrangement for the sub-program, so a certificate from an SCC-accredited body is widely accepted abroad.6

Certification is a choice. ISO notes that some organizations implement the standard for the practices it contains, while others also get certified to reassure customers; it reports over 70 000 certificates in 150 countries in its 2022 survey.1 SCC lists procurement eligibility requirements, regulatory compliance and competitive differentiation as common reasons Canadian organizations turn to accredited certification.6

ISO 27001 implementation: what the standard asks of your ISMS

ISO 27001 implementation means building a management system around your information risks: you set the scope, assess and treat risks, put controls in place, and keep the whole thing running and improving. The standard says its requirements apply to all organizations regardless of type, size or nature, and that excluding any requirement in Clauses 4 to 10 is unacceptable when an organization claims conformity.2

The 2022 edition replaced the 2013 edition and was aligned with the harmonized structure shared by ISO management system standards and with ISO/IEC 27002:2022, the companion guide to information security controls.2 ISO/IEC 27002 covers topics such as access control, cryptography, human resource security and incident response, while ISO/IEC 27001 states what the management system itself must do.3 Amendment 1, published in 2024, added climate action changes to the text.1

  • Clause 4, context of the organization: who has a stake in your information and where the ISMS starts and stops (4.3).2
  • Clause 5, leadership: commitment from management, an information security policy (5.2) and assigned roles (5.3).2
  • Clause 6, planning: actions to address risks and opportunities (6.1) and security objectives with a plan to reach them (6.2).2
  • Clause 7, support: resources, competence, awareness, communication and documented information (7.5).2
  • Clause 8, operation: running the risk treatment in daily work (8.1).2
  • Clauses 9 and 10: checking that the system works, through internal audit and management review, and improving it.

ISO 27001 gap analysis: where readiness starts

An ISO 27001 gap analysis compares how your company handles information today with each requirement of the standard and each control you are likely to need, so you know the size of the job before anyone books an auditor. We do it through interviews, a look at your systems and a review of the documents you already have.

Most small companies have more in place than they think: password rules, backups, a laptop policy in the employee handbook, an IT provider who patches servers. The gap analysis shows which of these count as evidence, which need to be written down, and which are missing. You receive a list ranked by effort and risk, with what we can fix together and what needs a decision from management.

A gap analysis also settles scope early. Certifying one product team or one office is a legitimate choice, and the standard expects you to state those boundaries yourself.2 A narrow, honest scope often gets a small company through its first audit sooner than an attempt to cover everything at once.

From scope to certificate: the ISO 27001 audit path

The ISO 27001 audit is done by your chosen certification body in stages: an initial audit in two parts, stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillance audits while the certificate is valid and a re-certification audit later.75 The certification body plans both stages of the initial audit and tells you in advance what each one will look at.

Our work happens before stage 1 and between the stages. By the time the auditor arrives, the scope is written, risks are assessed and owned, the Statement of Applicability is signed, policies are approved and in use, and an internal audit has already tested the system. If stage 1 raises points, we help you close them before stage 2.

To choose a certification body, ISO suggests comparing several, checking that each follows the relevant conformity assessment standards and checking accreditation; certificates from accredited bodies can be looked up in the international CertSearch database.4 Use the full reference when you announce the result, for example certified to ISO/IEC 27001:2022.1

What we do as your ISO 27001 consultant

As your ISO 27001 consultant, we take part in establishing and maintaining your ISMS, which the international rules for certification bodies call management system consultancy and keep separate from the certification audit.5 We start with a 30-minute conversation, then a scope letter that names the work, the dates and what we may touch.

Scope and context

We write down which offices, teams, systems and services the ISMS covers, which outside parties depend on it, and what lies outside the boundary, with the reasons.

Risk assessment and risk register

We run the risk assessment with the people who know the work, then keep a risk register with an owner, a treatment decision and a date for each risk.

Statement of Applicability

For each Annex A control we record whether it applies, why, and how it is met or planned. Auditors read the Statement of Applicability closely, so we tie every line to evidence.

Policies and procedures

We write the policies your ISMS needs for the way your company really works, in English, French or both. See security policies for that service on its own.

Technical gaps

Where the gap analysis finds missing multi-factor sign-in, untested backups or loose access rights, we fix them with your IT provider or on our own, then record the date each item was closed.

Internal audit and audit support

We run an internal audit against the standard and your own policies, prepare management review material, and stay available while the certification body audits.

What you have in hand before the certification audit

Before the certification audit you hold a complete set of ISMS documents in your company's name, written in plain language, with a technical appendix for whoever runs your IT. Everything belongs to you and stays useful after the certificate arrives.

  • The ISMS scope statement with its boundaries and the reasons for them
  • The risk register with owners, treatment decisions and dates
  • The signed Statement of Applicability, each control linked to evidence
  • Approved policies and procedures, plus a record that staff have read them
  • The internal audit report and management review notes
  • A short list of what remains before stage 1, with owners

ISO 27001, SOC 2 or CyberSecure Canada: which one your customers mean

ISO/IEC 27001 is the right target when a customer or a public buyer asks for an ISO certificate by name, or when you sell abroad, because the certificate is issued under an internationally recognized accreditation arrangement.6 When a United States or Canadian software customer asks for a SOC 2 report, that is a separate attestation by a CPA firm, prepared on our SOC 2 readiness page.

When a Canadian partner asks for CyberSecure Canada, the work is lighter and has its own page. The compliance overview explains how these standards relate to Ontario and federal rules. A risk register and policies built for one framework carry over to the others, so the order can follow your customers. An ongoing security lead role, often called a virtual CISO, is available on request.

Why a contracted team: the risks of an ISO 27001 project done alone, with a chatbot or a freelancer

An ISMS assembled alone usually turns into a binder of borrowed documents that describe a company nobody recognizes. Auditors compare the paper with daily work, so policies that staff have never seen, a risk register written in one afternoon and a Statement of Applicability without evidence lead to findings at stage 1.

A chatbot produces fluent policy text and a confident list of controls, yet it has never seen your systems, mixes the 2013 and 2022 editions and leaves you with documents no one can defend in an interview. A freelancer can fill gaps quickly, though few sign a fixed scope, keep the working papers or remain reachable for the surveillance audits that follow.

A contracted team works under a written scope letter, keeps dated records of every decision, hands the documents to you and stays on call through the audit cycle. INNOVA CONSULT LTD. carries commercial general liability insurance, and the price is fixed before work begins.

How the work goes

Five steps, in the same order every time.

Before any test, you sign a scope letter: what we test, on which dates, who to call, and what we must leave alone.

Your signature comes first

  1. Step 1

    We agree what to check

A short call, or the form at the foot of this page. Together we decide which website, server or office systems we look at.

  2. Step 2

    You sign the scope letter

It sets the targets, the dates, the contacts, and what we must leave alone. Work starts only once it is signed.

  3. Step 3

We check, and write it down

One report in plain words for you, with the technical detail attached for whoever looks after your systems.

  4. Step 4

    We fix it

We make the repairs ourselves, or together with your current IT provider or web developer.

  5. Step 5

    We check again

A second check confirms that each problem is closed.

What it costs

Each job is a different size, so each one gets a fixed quote once the scope is agreed. You see the price in writing before any work starts.

  • A fixed quote once the scope is agreed
  • The price in writing before work starts

Questions

Questions owners ask us

Your question is missing? Leave your number and ask it in your own words.

How long does ISO 27001 certification take?
It depends on the size of the scope, how much of the ISMS already exists, and the certification body's calendar for stage 1 and stage 2. A company with written policies and working backups moves faster than one starting from zero. After the gap analysis we put the readiness timeline in the scope letter, and the certification body sets its own audit dates.
How much does ISO 27001 certification cost in Canada?
Two costs add up: our readiness work and the certification body's audit fees, which the certification body quotes separately. Our part depends on the number of sites, staff and systems in scope, how much documentation exists, and whether we also fix technical gaps. After a 30-minute conversation you receive a scope letter with a fixed price, and work starts only once you sign.
What is a Statement of Applicability?
A Statement of Applicability, or SoA, lists the controls in Annex A of ISO/IEC 27001, states for each one whether it applies to your organization and why, and shows whether it is in place or planned. Auditors use it as a map of your ISMS, so each line should point to evidence such as a policy, a setting or a record.
Do you issue the ISO 27001 certificate?
The certificate comes only from a certification body, ideally one accredited by the Standards Council of Canada or another accreditation body. ISO itself certifies nobody. INNOVA CONSULT LTD. prepares your ISMS before the audit and supports you during it; the audit decision belongs to the certification body, which keeps consulting and certification separate.
Is ISO 27001 mandatory in Canada?
ISO/IEC 27001 is a voluntary standard. Companies usually pursue certification because a customer, a public buyer or a partner asks for it; the Standards Council of Canada names procurement eligibility requirements, regulatory compliance and competitive differentiation as common reasons. If nobody has asked yet, a lighter framework such as CyberSecure Canada may fit better.
Is ISO 27001 worth it for a 20-person company?
It can be, when contracts depend on it. The standard is written to apply to organizations of any type, size or nature, and a narrow scope keeps the workload proportionate. If the request comes from one software customer, a SOC 2 report or CyberSecure Canada may cost less effort; we compare the options with you before any scope letter.
What changed in ISO/IEC 27001:2022?
The third edition, published in October 2022, replaced ISO/IEC 27001:2013. Its text was aligned with the harmonized structure of ISO management system standards and with ISO/IEC 27002:2022, which reorganized the controls. Amendment 1, published in 2024, added climate action changes. When you announce a certificate, ISO asks for the full reference, ISO/IEC 27001:2022.
